The Nature of Reclaimed Timber: Craft, Character and Care

The Nature of Reclaimed Timber

At Maison Est, our reclaimed timber furniture is crafted to be lived with and enjoyed for many years. We work with solid reclaimed timber sourced from old buildings, where the timber has naturally aged over decades. This history gives each piece its depth of tone, varied grain and distinctive texture.

Reclaimed timber is not uniform, and that is its appeal. Variations in colour, markings, knots and surface movement are inherent to the material. Splits, minor cracks and irregularities may develop over time as the timber continues to respond to its environment. These changes are not faults. They are part of the organic character of solid wood and do not compromise structural integrity.

Caring for Your Timber

To maintain the appearance of your piece:

  • Avoid direct contact with heat and moisture
  • Always use coasters, placemats and protective coverings
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
  • Dust with a dry or lightly damp cloth

Our pieces are designed to age gracefully. Over time, they will develop a lived-in patina that reflects your home and lifestyle.

If you prefer to maintain a more consistent surface finish, a clear matte, water-based sealer may be applied periodically. This is optional and should be undertaken carefully.

Because timber is a natural material, it reacts to temperature, humidity and airflow. We recommend avoiding placement in direct sunlight, near fireplaces, heaters or heavy air-conditioning, as extreme conditions can increase movement within the wood.

From Salvaged Timber to Finished Piece

Sourcing

Our process begins with carefully sourcing reclaimed elm and pine from old farmhouses and rural buildings. These structures, often decades old, are dismantled and the timber is salvaged rather than discarded. This approach extends the life of valuable hardwood and reduces the demand for newly harvested timber.

Drying and Preparation

Once sourced, the timber is thoroughly dried and stabilised. This step is essential to preserving the structural integrity of the wood and preparing it for furniture production while maintaining its natural character.

Craftsmanship

Skilled craftsmen then shape and assemble each piece. The marks of age, grain variation and surface texture are retained wherever possible, allowing the history of the material to remain visible. The result is furniture that carries both durability and individuality.
